Don’t Rely on Social Media Privacy Settings

When it comes to sharing pictures, thoughts, and frustrations to your social network. Don’t rely on your social media privacy settings to keep your posts out of sight to untrusted eyes.

Assume everything you post is being viewed by either your ex or their attorney, because it likely is.

Once your divorce is pending, you should expect to be under close scrutiny by your ex and their legal team. Privacy settings fluctuate frequently, and can be confusing to manage. For this reason, we recommend never posting anything you don’t want your ex to use against you.

The ease of screenshots and share ability is another reason you don’t want to rely on social media privacy settings. Even if you have the best privacy settings a mutual (or former) mutual friend of you and your ex, can screenshot and share those posts. In cases where an ex is particularly deviant, they have duplicated a friend’s account, pretending to be them to gain information.

In addition to being cautious when posting any photos that could paint you in a bad light. The legal resource site, HG.org, also recommends not using your social media as a support system. As their article notes, social media is a public forum and online friends are not that trustworthy. Instead of posting your frustration online, call a trusted friend to vent.

Social Media Posts Can Be Used in Court

As we mentioned in our blog Social Media, Technology, and Your Divorce, what you post on social media can be used against you in court. Which is why you should avoid discussing your divorce online.

If you know keeping your frustration offline will be too difficult, consider taking a hiatus from social media until your divorce is final. Damaging your divorce case will not be worth the social media rant. When in doubt, take a break and call a trusted friend.
