Avoid Making Rash Decisions

It is never advised to make decisions without first fully contemplating all the consequences. As much as you may want to “get it over with,” and chose the path that will make the issue disappear. This is the time to really be patient with the decision making process.

From a legal standpoint, the decisions you make and agree to regarding spousal support, division of property, and child custody. Will have consequences long after the divorce papers are signed.

Take the time to weigh your options when your logical thinking is at play. While emotional thinking can serve as a guide, you want to make sure you have thought through all options to make the most rational decision.

Let Go of What You Can’t Control

This can be the most difficult in practice. If you are in a contentious divorce. It is natural to become defensive. Unfortunately, engaging with an ex in this way only takes a toll on your mental well being.

Instead of getting sucked into their turmoil, chose to disengage. If necessary, reserve all communication to take place between your legal teams.

Remember You Are Still Fun

Just because you are facing a stressful life change, does not mean you have to live in that stress 24/7. Give yourself permission to laugh, and participate in mood boosting activities.

Get lunch with friends, take yourself to the movies, get out in nature. Whatever you enjoy. These small moments may not erase the stress, but they will help you to feel more like yourself.
